What action is "lunastaa" describing here?

"repossess"/"(re)claim" might make sense in some contexts, but it doesn't quite match the role that I would imagine an insurance company having here.

Yes, and I think every language probably has them, were a seemingly simple word takes on broader or more specific contextual meaning, which isn't always apparent, especially for people living outside that country (and time for research is often limited in the middle of an assignment).

A further illustration of why I find "lunastaa" such a challenge. :) It's one of those verbs that I can translate in certain fixed contexts, but when I have to decipher it in a new type of context, it tends to slip out of my fingers. ("kuitata" is a similar case.)

I must say I've never thought of it as deeply, but the way I see it, in this context of vehicles and insurance companies, "lunastaa" has become a concept referring to this process, including "writing off" a vehicle.

The insurance company assesses the damage to the car after an accident and if it's not worth repairing, it pays the owner what it thinks is the value of the car and so becomes the new owner of the car. The insurance company then sells the "lunastetut" or written-off cars e.g. in an auction (some people buy them and fix them, or use them as spare parts).

There are many cases where the translation of "lunastaa" that you mention ("redeem") makes sense. But I can't quite see (at least not yet) how an insurance company is redeeming / (re)gaining a car when they write it off.

Would it help if you think of "lunastaa" as "redeem", which according to Oxford dictionary is defined as: "gain or regain possession of (something) in exchange for payment." However, literal translation ("redeemed by insurance company") is not practical here.

I've known it as write-off, or writing the car off, but perhaps there is a more formal way of expressing it in the legal context.
