Discussion

jarry (X) Nov 24, 2005:
I think "vloot" is meant metaphorically. The "Zilveren Vloot" for instance is something of which every Dutchman would immediately understand the implication . "Florijn" is of course the old word for 'guilder'.
R. Chakravarti (asker) Nov 24, 2005:
May be so as you say, but I was wondering whether there is some type of account like 'vlootrekening' prevalent and if so what could be the English equivalent.
jarry (X) Nov 24, 2005:
I don't think you should attempt to translate this since it sounds like a proper name for a certain type of savings account.

Children's savings account

The Florijnenvlootrekening is a savings account from ABN AMRO for children. In the past there was the "Zilvervlootrekening" also for children (I had one!) but this is a new name for a similar thing. Children can save small amounts in it and the interest is claimed to be good.

Another expression could be \"Junior savings account\" or something like that.
Peer comment(s):

agree Harry Borsje : additionally, annual deposits are limited and at the end, when the child turns 15, there's a 15% bonus; maybe you should include that somehow, like Special or Restricted
