English term

seawear

English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
Hello!
I would like to know from an English mother tongue if the word "seawear" (used as a synonym of "beachwear" but with a more general and neutral meaning), makes sense somehow and if it is grammatically correct.

I really don't like it and don't think it's appropriate or correct, but I'm not sure and I'd like to receive further evidence about it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Rachel Fell Nov 13, 2014:
"nautical wear" is used, for people going out on boats, for example, or "resort wear" if for a more seaside location sense
Sheila Wilson Nov 13, 2014:
Understand, or guess? I think readers would reckon they were guessing, at least to some extent, when they assumed "seawear" to be deck shoes, striped navy-blue tops and sou'westers.
Charles Davis Nov 13, 2014:
"Grammatically correct" I don't think it's really a question of being grammatically correct or incorrect. It's a perfectly well-formed word that could exist in principle — there are plenty of similar words ending in -wear — but simply doesn't. As Terry says, I think a native speaker would understand it to mean clothing worn at sea, rather than on the beach. There are words native speakers use that other native speakers don't like or regard as incorrect, but this is a word that is simply not used at all. It's difficult to provide evidence of this, since the evidence is negative.
Terry Richards Nov 13, 2014:
There isn't any such word But, if there was, it would make me think of something a sailor would wear on a boat rather than the beach.
Helena Chavarria Nov 13, 2014:
I don't think there's just one word. It's more common to see 'beachwear', 'swimwear', 'wetsuits', etc.
Suzan Hamer Nov 13, 2014:
I don't like it either, would not use it, and would think anyone who used it wasn't a native English speaker.
Veronika McLaren Nov 13, 2014:
possibly seaside clothing/apparel would be more common
