German term

passivischer Unterschiedsbetrag

I found a very enlightening piece on aktiver Unterschiedsbetrag here,
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/accounting/43963...
but there was no mention of the passiver or "passivischer" (noch schöner...) Unterschiedsbetrag.

If anyone (looking at you, Robin) has a suggestion, it would be much appreciated.

BTW this is HGB...

(net) liability

If the absolute difference between the cost of offset assets and the settlement amount of offset liabilities is recorded on the liabilities side of the balance sheet, the net amount must be a liability.

Yes, you can translate the second sentence as such, or combine it concisely with the first sentence ("..., resulting in a net liability of XXX.").
Note from asker:
Am I right in assuming that this is another case of pithy English replacing verbose German... I don't need to use all those other words (like passivischer, Vermögensverrechnug, etc.). Just "This results in a net liability amounting to XXX."
Peer comment(s):

agree Ted Wozniak : Agree with "net liaiblity"

agree RobinB : Yes, I'd agree with "net post-employment benefit liability", i.e. where pension provisions exceed plan assets. Note that this isn't reported separately on the balance sheet, so I presume that the German is merely a disclosure, or even a comment.

shortfall

I am assuming this is to do with pension rights? In which case the calculated assets do not cover the calculated liabilities, so there is a shortfall. If it is some other kind of asset then maybe a negative difference, but sure someone can do better than that.
