Dutch term
het loskomen van zuilen
Dutch to English
Other
Government / Politics
Whole sentence is a corker but I've no idea what's meant by this phrase. Help, please!

loosing of traditional social divisions
My take on this matter

Chris Hopley
: Presuming you mean 'loosening', a good general purpose translation.

Yes Loosening would be correct - sometimes think my English suffers from speed - thanks

: I could live with this, also agree with Chris's "loosening"

Comment: "I came across the term "depillarisation" when Maaike pointed me in the direction of ontzuiling and I was hoping someone would save me from having to use that! ;-) Not sure if target audience would be sufficiently clued up about Dutch society so "loosening (or perhaps erosion) of traditional social divisions" would seem to fit the bill. Thanks, everyone!"

zie ook: ontzuiling
Do you know what it means? If you're not familiar with the term, search for "ontzuiling" and you'll understand. But if it's just the translation..I don't know if there's a term for it in English.. (I'm Dutch)

deconfessionalization
This was to be distinguished from political deconfessionalization in that it included matters of personal status and family relations, which, in the view of Muslims must remain governed by religious law.

depillarisation
Netherlandicists refer to 'verzuiling' in English as 'pillarisation'. So the opposite would be 'depillarisation'. I realise that these may be specialist terms that require knowledge of Dutch society and culture, and so may not be appropriate if the text is intended for a more generalist readership. In which case, Kate's answer would be better.
-> "SOCON emerged from the inter-university research program Society and Religion in the Netherlands (Maatschappij en Religie in Nederland: MAREN) of leading sociologists of religion in Holland. It began, in 1979, as a study on secularisation and depillarisation in the Netherlands by a small research group at the University of Nijmegen, with an anticipated lifetime of five years."

-> "One salient feature of Dutch society is its cultural and organisational segmentation in ideological blocs. Religious blocs in particular have set up a whole array of organisations (political parties, interest organisations, schools, universities, newspapers, health and welfare agencies, broadcasting companies, leisure associations) encompassing practically every sphere of social life. This situation is known as pillarisation (verzuiling). Processes of
depillarisation (ontzuiling) can be observed in changing mass beliefs, collective behaviour and interorganisational relations since the 'sixties. This paper based on longitudinal Dutch survey data examines identification with the pillarised ideologies and questions increasing ideological unsteadiness and intergenerational instability as correlates of the depillarisation trend."

Ik denk dat men bedoelt:
vervagen
in betekenis afnemen
Ze zijn er namelijk nog wel, maar ze staan niet meer zo stevig verankerd als in de jaren 50. Ze lopen steeds meer in elkaar over.
