I have seen significant discrepancies in prices quoted by translators in ProZ biddings, and I feel sometimes offensed by the \"Chinese\" price level of some colleagues, what makes me think on their quality. I totally agree with you Gilberto. Something has to be done. I am a relatively newcomer to Proz. I established my rates at 1/2 of what I charge to local/direct clients to be more in tune with what I saw offered by other Proz members.I don\'t think I will ever get a job offer when other translators are bidding at a third and sometimes less of what I\'m bidding. | | | Questão de Profissionalismo. | Feb 13, 2002 |
| | | Márcio Badra Brazilië Local time: 22:34 Lid 2023 Engels naar Portugees There is nothing that could be done | Feb 15, 2002 |
There will always be cheap translators and clients looking only for low rates will always find them, open bidding or not. But we should never forget that if you buy cheap you get cheap. Sooner or later this kind of clients will have to turn to better professionals.
In the other hand, any attempt of creating a reference price list could be seen as cartelization, a crime in many jurisdictions, including mine.

... but we HAVE to do something | Feb 28, 2002 |
Marcio is, of course, right in that we have laws to contend with.
But our profession is in REAL JEOPARDY with these cheap translators. They make the rest of us, charging reasonable, traditional prices, seem outrageously expensive!
If the clients see someone offering to translate at $0.02 a word, what are they to say when I ask for $0.13? And this is at the LOW end of my scale! (At least it was until ProZ!)

We have to put our heads together and find a way to overcome this problem!
