"Write to win clients: Content marketing strategies every freelance translator should know"

Many freelance translators know they should create content, but they struggle with what to write, where to publish it, and how to turn it into real business opportunities. As a result, they rely heavily on job boards and cold outreach while overlooking one of the most effective long-term client acquisition strategies.

In this practical 20-minute session, you'll discover simple content writing techniques that help demonstrate your expertise, improve your online visibility, and build trust with potential clients. You'll learn how to create content that answers client questions, positions you as a specialist, and continues attracting prospects long after it is published.

12:25 - 13:10 GMT FINISHED

"The new normal: Building resilience and professional identity in an AI-disrupted language career"

The anxiety running through the language industry right now isn't just about fewer jobs; it's about what happens to your sense of professional worth when the market keeps sending the same message: AI can do this cheaper, faster, and good enough. Workflow steps you spent years building expertise around quietly disappear. Freelance roles that were 20 hours a week are suddenly down to two or nothing. And for those of us actively job searching, there's a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from applying constantly, hearing nothing, and trying to figure out whether to pivot, persist, or both.

This session approaches that reality from two angles.

First, understanding what's actually happening psychologically. The session will draw on lived experience on both sides of the shift, as a language professional navigating her own career disruption, and as someone who managed a freelance network and watched it contract sharply as AI entered the workflow.

We'll discuss the patterns honestly: how rejection affects your professional identity, the erosion of confidence that comes from prolonged devaluation, and the specific burnout risk that builds when you're simultaneously overextending to stay visible and receiving little in return.

Second, and more practically, we'll look at what resilience actually is when the disruption isn't a moment but a new normal. We'll cover concrete strategies for protecting your energy and mental health through an extended period of uncertainty.

This session is for language professionals who are in it for the long haul and need strategies to stay grounded, protect their energy, and hold onto their sense of professional identity while the market catches up with their value.

"Panel discussion: Innovating in the new language professional role with human judgement"

This panel brings together leading voices in the language industry to explore how professional identity, technology, and clients' expectations are reshaping the role of translators and interpreters. We’ll examine how professionals can adapt, diversify, or pivot into new paths; how the community is navigating the divide between resilience and rejection of AI; and how client trust and perception influence the way these changes unfold. At the center of this discussion lies one constant: the irreplaceable value of human judgement.

This panel discussion will be divided into three main points:

  1. Redefining the role and meaning of the language professional: Stay and adapt/diversify, or pivot into something new
  2. Resilience vs rejection of AI
  3. Client’s trust and perspective on the subject

"Translator + toolmaker: Building the software nobody sells you"

I run a small technical translation agency. In February this year, I had never written a line of code. I still haven't — and since March, my team has been working inside tools that didn't exist until we needed them.

This is not a talk about AI writing your translations. It's about the other half of the job — file conversion, layout, terminology checks, QA reporting — where the software you actually need has never been for sale, and where waiting for a vendor to build it has been the default plan for as long as any of us have worked.

I'll go through what we built and how: which parts of the work we handed to machines, which stayed firmly human, how we check whether the output is any good, where our data goes and where it doesn't, and the mistakes that cost us the most time. Live numbers and before-and-after cases from current production — including documents that used to take weeks of manual layout, and tools that plug into the CAT you already use instead of replacing it.

If you've been telling yourself you're not technical enough for this: that's exactly the point.

"Teaching future translators in an AI-first world"

Artificial intelligence has transformed professional translation faster than many educational programs can adapt. Tasks that once required hours of drafting can now be completed in minutes, shifting the translator's role from text production toward evaluation, critical thinking, quality assessment, cultural adaptation, and strategic decision-making.

This presentation explores how translation education is evolving in response to these changes. Drawing on classroom experience in translation and localization, it discusses how course design, assignments, assessment, and student expectations have changed in an AI-assisted environment.

Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for translators, the session argues that educators should focus on developing the uniquely human skills that remain difficult to automate: judgment, intercultural competence, domain expertise, ethical reasoning, and the ability to collaborate effectively with AI systems. Practical examples of redesigned classroom activities, assessment strategies, and lessons learned will be shared.

"Show up, stand out: LinkedIn content that actually attracts clients"

Most translators know they "should" be more visible on LinkedIn — but between a blank profile and a blank content calendar, most never get past posting sporadically and hoping for the best. This session connects the two missing pieces: a profile built to convert, and a content approach that actually gets seen by the right people.

Virginia will walk through how to turn a static LinkedIn profile into a prospecting asset, then share a simple, repeatable content framework — what to post, how often, and how to talk about your work without it feeling like self-promotion. Built from years of coaching 300+ language professionals through exactly this shift, this session offers a practical system you can start applying the same day, whether you're just getting started on LinkedIn or trying to finally make it work for you.

Key takeaways for attendees:

- 3 profile fixes to make immediately
- A simple content framework for consistent, authentic visibility
- Ideas for what to actually post as a translator (without running out of things to say)

"The curious translator: Why lifelong learning begins with curiosity"

How can curiosity shape lifelong learning — and the way we respond to change?

The Curious Translator explores lifelong learning not as a checklist of skills to acquire, but as an attitude towards professional change. Rather than offering a formula for success, the session takes an honest look at learning, experimenting and adapting — including what works, what works only partly, and what does not lead where expected.

Drawing on personal experience and the unexpected connections that can emerge between different areas of knowledge, the session invites language professionals to look differently at what they already know, follow their curiosity even when they don't yet know where it might lead, and stay open to the possibilities that can emerge along the way.

"Translator 5.0: From language expert to meaning architect. How language professionals can stay indispensable in the age of generative AI"

Artificial intelligence is transforming the language industry, but it is also redefining what makes professional translators valuable. As routine translation tasks become increasingly automated, the profession is shifting toward roles that require human judgment, creativity, cultural intelligence, and ethical decision-making.

This session introduces the concept of Translator 5.0, a future-oriented framework inspired by the principles of Society 5.0, where humans and AI collaborate rather than compete.

Drawing on recent research and real-world examples, the presentation explores how translators can evolve from language specialists into meaning architects who design, evaluate, and refine multilingual communication in partnership with AI.

Participants will discover which skills are becoming more valuable, how AI is changing translation workflows, and what practical steps they can take to build a sustainable and rewarding career in the years ahead. Rather than asking whether AI will replace translators, this session focuses on a more important question: What kind of translator will thrive in the future?

14:50 - 15:10 GMT FINISHED

"Translator & athlete: What endurance sport taught me about building a career for the long run"

A concise, story-led session exploring what language professionals can learn from endurance sport about developing a meaningful and sustainable career.

Neither athletic progress nor a lasting professional career is built through intensity alone. Both require direction, consistency, intelligent pacing, recovery, adaptability and the ability to continue through uncertainty. These principles feel particularly relevant at a time when language professionals are being encouraged to learn new tools, reconsider their specialisations and develop broader professional identities.

Through one personal endurance story, we will explore five lessons:

- Know what you are training for.
- Build consistency before intensity.
- Manage effort and energy intelligently.
- Treat recovery as part of the process.
- Review, adapt and keep moving.

There's no winning formula, but let's focus on:

  • The big reset: what are some questions we can ask ourselves so to strategize our next steps?

17:10 - 17:50 GMT FINISHED

"The translator’s brain: Neuroplasticity, reinvention and the future of language professionals"

The language industry is changing rapidly, but professional reinvention involves more than learning new tools or developing new technical skills. It also requires us to understand the patterns, beliefs and identity structures that influence how we respond to uncertainty, technology and change.

In this presentation, I will explore how the skills developed through translation and interpreting — including cognitive flexibility, deep listening, intercultural communication, adaptability, rapid cognitive switching and working under pressure — can become powerful transferable assets in new professional paths.

I will also introduce the concept of Hidden Codes: internal patterns that may lead experienced professionals to resist change, undervalue their expertise, procrastinate, overthink or feel like beginners again when entering a new field.

The presentation will combine behavioural neuroscience, neuroplasticity, professional experience and practical reflection, helping participants to:

  • recognise the transferable skills they have already developed;
  • understand how the brain responds to uncertainty and professional change;
  • identify patterns such as perfectionism, procrastination, scarcity, excessive control and self-doubt;
  • use neuroplasticity to build a more flexible professional identity;
  • approach AI and industry transformation from a position of curiosity, adaptability and professional value.
