La Rédaction : Pour vous, comment l’art influence-t-il notre société?
Nathalie Bondil : l’art, c’est le langage de l’émotion, notre communication avec un monde sensible, instinctif, complémentaire du langage cérébral et cognitif, une passerelle entre ces deux dimensions qui sont la vie. Il est indissociable de ce que nous sommes, un animal doué de raison… pas des robots… Au quotidien, l’art est nécessaire pour pleinement comprendre qui nous sommes, au sens individuel et collectif. Je suis persuadée qu’il nous fait du bien, nous rend plus complet, bref, fait de nous de meilleurs êtres humains, non pas dans le sens d’une moralité, mais en bâtissant une harmonie entre notre être de raison et notre animalité. Au quotidien, l’art est partout, c’est un œil ouvert sur le monde : L’émotion ressentie devant un paysage, à mes yeux, c’est de l’art.
La rédaction : Quels conseils donneriez-vous à la relève ?
NB : La seule vie que vous ayez se trouve entre vos mains : 1 - Soyez positif, cherchez le sourire, le rire… et l’autodérision ; refusez la complainte ; acceptez vos responsabilités, ne les rejetez pas sur les autres, vous vous sentirez libre de conduire votre vie 2 - Avoir une vie intéressante… est tout simplement plus intéressant : une tautologie mais une vérité ; développez des intérêts tous les jours, ne faites pas une différence entre votre vie au travail et la vraie vie, cultivez vos passions, elles grandiront. 3 – Soyez travaillant, déterminé, entreprenant, imaginatif… Et n’ayez pas peur de l’échec, il fait partie de la vie, et souvent formateur.
La Rédaction : Enfin, quels sont vos prochains défis ?
NB : Rien n’est jamais gagné malgré la croissance phénoménale que connait le Musée : Tous les trois mois, nos nouveaux projets obligent au succès critique et public, académique et de proximité : c’est une volonté d’innovation constante, un effort de toutes les équipes, un souci du détail, un sens du service aux clientèles, l’amélioration toujours prioritaire… Un défi parfois stressant, toujours stimulant… Mais relativisons : Je ne sauve pas des vies… l’art peut-être que oui…

Géocitoyen: In your opinion, how does art influence our society?
Nathalie Bondil: Art is the language of emotion— our way of communicating with the world of senses and instincts, a necessary complement to more cerebral and cognitive language and a bridge between those two dimensions of our lives. It’s inseparable from what we are: animals with the gift of reason... not robots! In daily life, we need art to fully understand who we are, in both an individual and collective sense. I’m convinced that art is good for us, completes us. In short, it makes us better people— not in a moral sense, but in terms of creating harmony between our rational side and our animal nature. In daily life, art is everywhere, it’s just having your eyes open to the world. The emotions that we feel when looking at a natural landscape— for me, that’s art.
Géocitoyen: What advice would you give to the younger generation?
NB: You've only got one life, and it's in your own hands! First of all, be positive, smile and laugh a lot... and make fun of yourself! Don’t complain. Accept your responsibilities and don’t push them off onto others; you’ll feel more free to lead your life. Second, remember that it’s much more interesting... to live an interesting life. It’s a tautology, but it’s true; develop your interests every day, don’t make a division between your work life and “real life”, and cultivate your passions to make them grow. Finally, be hard-working, determined, imaginative and self-motivated... and don’t be afraid of failure. It’s part of life, and often educational.
Géocitoyen: What challenges are you taking on next?
NB: Despite the Museum’s phenomenal growth, we can’t take anything for granted. Every three months, our new projects require us to achieve critical and popular success, academic and local success. It’s a drive for constant innovation, an effort from all our teams, with attention to detail, customer service, and improvement always our priority. A challenge that’s sometimes stressful, and always exciting. But let’s put things in perspective: I’m not saving any lives... although maybe art does...

Malgré son statut de grande ville, Montréal est une métropole qui donne une grande place à l’agriculture sous toutes ses formes.
En effet, les montréalais envahissent les marchés aussitôt que le beau temps s’installe et que les produits frais et locaux sont à l’honneur. Mais saviez-vous que cet héritage agricole nous vient des autochtones? Ils ont été les premiers à cultiver courges, citrouilles, haricots et maïs (communément appelé blé d’inde!) sur l’île de Montréal.
Beaucoup plus tard, la première ferme d’importance voit le jour pour nourrir la colonie : la maison Saint-Gabriel. Vient ensuite la prolifération des fermes et des domaines au 19e siècle. Montréal compte alors un millier d’agriculteurs uniquement sur l’île!
Aujourd’hui, bien loin de l’agriculture d’antan, plus de 40% des Montréalais pratiqueraient l’agriculture urbaine et pour ceux qui n’aurait ni l’espace ni le pousse vert, différentes initiatives urbaines permettent d’avoir accès à des fruits et légumes comme l’organisme Fruixi.
L’agriculture à Montréal c’est aussi l’un des plus important programme d’agriculture urbaine au monde avec plus de 8500 parcelles réparties dans 97 jardins, 75 jardins collectifs et de nombreuses initiatives privées.
Malgré quelques centaines d’années d’histoire et de transformation, l’agriculture montréalaise est toujours aussi précieuse dans le cœur de ses habitants qui la pratique parfois à plus petite échelle sur un balcon ou dans un jardin communautaire!

It may seem surprising for such a big city, but Montreal makes plenty of room for agriculture in all its forms.
Montreal’s public markets are packed with shoppers as soon as spring weather arrives and fresh local products take centre stage. But did you know that this agricultural heritage comes from Quebec’s indigenous populations? They were the first to cultivate squash, pumpkins, beans and corn (commonly known here as blé d’Inde, or “Indian wheat”) on the island of Montreal.
Much later, the Maison Saint-Gabriel became the colony’s first major farm for food crops. Farms and estates then began to proliferate in the 19th century; before long, there were over a thousand growers on the island of Montreal alone!
Now, with those days long behind us, some 40% of Montreal residents still practice some form of urban agriculture. For those who don’t have the space or the green thumb for it, a variety of urban initiatives (including Fruixi) provide access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Montreal is also home to one of the world’s largest urban agriculture programs, with more than 8500 plots distributed over 97 gardens, 75 community gardens and a number of private initiatives.
After centuries of history and transformation, urban agriculture is still as important as ever to the Montrealers that participate in it— even when it’s on a smaller scale, like on their balconies or in local community gardens.

Wer kann andere Nationen besonders gut zum Lachen bringen? Die Deutschen jedenfalls nicht. Sie landeten im Vergleich mit 15 Ländern auf dem letzten Platz.
Lachen verbindet die Menschen weltweit. Doch es gibt Unterschiede, worüber in den verschiedenen Kulturen gelacht wird – und ob andere Nationen auch über diese Witze lachen können. Die Social-Networking-Plattform Badoo hat nun versucht in einer weltweiten Umfrage sozusagen den Witz-Weltmeister herauszufinden.
Die einfachen Fragen lauteten: Welches Volk kann Mitmenschen am besten zum Lachen bringen, und welches Volk kann dies eben nicht – jedenfalls nicht so gut? Was darauf rund 30.000 Menschen weltweit antworteten, ist für die Deutschen wenig witzig.
Klarer Sieger: Die Amerikaner
Sie landeten im Vergleich mit 15 anderen Ländern auf dem letzten Platz. Die Amerikaner dagegen gingen aus dieser Umfrage als klare Sieger hervor. Sie dürfen sich – laut Badoos repräsentativer Erhebung – ab jetzt "witzigste Nation der Welt" nennen.
Auf Platz zwei und drei folgen die Spanier und die Italiener. Die Briten dagegen, die sich auf ihren Humor bekanntermaßen etwas einbilden, sind längst nicht so witzig, wie sie denken. Sie schaffen es nur auf den siebten Platz, sogar noch zwei Plätze hinter den Franzosen.
Humor ist zwar immer auch eine Geschmacksfrage, aber vielleicht sind die Amerikaner tatsächlich würdige Gewinner. Schließlich haben sie der Welt viele großartige Sitcoms und Stand-up-Comedians geschenkt.
Deutschlands ganz andere Komödientradition
Aber haben die Deutschen wirklich ein solch humorloses Image verdient? Der Gedanke, dass das Volk der Dichter und Denker ernster daherkommt als andere, ist nicht neu.
Der amerikanische Schriftsteller Mark Twain hat schon vor über einem Jahrhundert verkündet, dass deutsche Witze nicht zum Lachen geeignet seien. Dieses Klischee stammt wahrscheinlich von dem deutschen – oder preußischen – Ruf der Tüchtigkeit und Vernünftigkeit, Eigenschaften, die mit Humor angeblich nicht kompatibel sind.
So hat Deutschland auch eine ganz andere Komödientradition (insbesondere eine auf das 19. Jahrhundert zurückgehende Tradition des Kabaretts), bei der politische Satire und lustige Lieder miteinander vermischt werden – was im Ausland bisher nur selten für Lacher sorgte.
Henning Wehn bringt die Briten zum Lachen
Das Klischee der humorlosen Deutschen umfasst die Vorstellung, dass es den Deutschen schwerer fällt als anderen, über sich selbst zu lachen. Einer der wenigen erfolgreichen deutschen Spaß-Exportartikel ist der Comedian Henning Wehn, 37, der aus Hagen im Ruhrgebiet stammt.
Seine Masche, mit britischen Vorurteilen über die teutonische Humorlosigkeit und Rationalität zu ätzen, kommt in Großbritannien seit über sieben Jahren ziemlich gut an. Wehn nennt sich selbst den "deutschen Comedy-Botschafter im Vereinten Königreich". Nicht der einfachste aller Jobs.
"Die Briten sagen immer, dass wir Deutsche keinen Sinn für Humor haben", erzählt er dem Publikum: "Ich finde das nicht witzig." In einem der beliebtesten Teile von Wehns Show zerpflückt er seine eigenen Witze, um zu erklären, warum sie witzig sind, bevor er dann anhält und auf die Stoppuhr schaut, weil: sie "sagen immer, dass das Timing das Geheimnis der Comedy ist." Als er jedoch einmal versucht hat, mit seiner eigenen Witzsystematik Naziwitze zu sezieren, blieb der Applaus aus und wurde durch Pfiffe und Buhrufe ersetzt.
Die deutsche Sprache ist für Witze zu genau
Wehn glaubt, eine einfache Erklärung für die lustige Differenz gefunden zu haben: "Einer der Gründe sind die Unterschiede in Grammatik und Satzstruktur zwischen den beiden Sprachen Deutsch und Englisch."
Viele englischsprachige Witze beruhten auf der Möglichkeit, das Schlüsselwort des Witzes an das Ende des Satzes zu setzen. Überhaupt lebten ja viele Witze im Englischen von Wortspielen und beabsichtigten Wortverwechslungen, wohingegen die größere Genauigkeit des Deutschen es gerade erschwere, solche Verwechslungen zu erzeugen.
Für Wehn ist genau dies der Grund, "dass wir Deutschen körperlichen Humor so mögen. Ein alter Knacker, der über eine Torte fällt oder sie ins Gesicht bekommt, ist immer witzig, sogar während einer Hungersnot."
Der deutsche Comedy-Botschafter Wehn lässt sich von der schlechten Platzierung der Deutschen nicht einschüchtern. Über alles zu lachen sei nur ein Zeichen von Naivität, meint er. "Letztlich lieben wir Deutschen es, genauso wie die Briten, zu lachen. Mit dem Unterschied, dass wir am liebsten lachen, wenn die Arbeit erledigt ist, wohingegen es die Briten vorziehen zu lachen, anstatt zu arbeiten."

Who’s especially good at making other countries laugh? Not the Germans, that’s for sure. In a comparison of 15 countries, they came in last.
Laughter brings people together around the world. But there are differences in what different cultures find funny—and whether other countries can laugh about those jokes too. In a new worldwide survey, the social networking platform Badoo tried to find out which country is the world champion of comedy.
The survey’s simple questions asked which nation was best at making other people laugh, and which nations are no good at it— or at least, not as good. The answers that came back from 30,000 people around the world are no laughing matter for Germans.
Americans are the clear winners
In a comparison of 15 countries, Germans came in last. Americans, on the other hand, came out of the survey as the clear winners. According to Badoo’s representative assessment, they can now officially call themselves the “world’s funniest country”.
Right behind them were Spain and Italy in second and third place. As for the British, who are famously proud of their sense of humor, they’re not nearly as funny as they think. They only managed to reach seventh place—two places lower than even the French.
Of course, humor is always a question of taste, but the Americans may have actually earned their victory. They have, after all, given the world plenty of great sitcoms and stand-up comedians.
Germany’s very different comedic tradition
But does Germany really deserve such a humorless reputation? The idea that this nation of poets and philosophers is more serious than others is not a new one.
More than a century ago, American author Mark Twain claimed that German jokes were not designed to make people laugh. This cliché probably comes from Germans’ reputation—or rather, that of the Prussians— as hardworking and reasonable people. Those attributes are often considered incompatible with humor.
Germany also has a very different comedic tradition (in particular, a cabaret tradition that goes back to the 19th century), in which political satire and funny songs are mixed together. That mix has rarely been a source of much laughter outside of Germany.
Henning Wehn makes the British laugh
The cliché of the humorless German includes the assumption that Germans have a harder time laughing at themselves than others do. One of Germany’s few successful humor exports is comedian Henning Wehn, 37, who comes from Hagen in the Ruhr valley.
His shtick of poking fun at British stereotypes about Teutonic rationality and lack of humor has been fairly well-received in Great Britain for more than seven years. Wehn calls himself the “German comedy ambassador to the United Kingdom.” Not the easiest job in the world.
“The British always say that we Germans have no sense of humor,” he tells the audience. “I don’t think that’s funny.” In one of the most popular parts of Wehn’s show, he picks apart his own jokes to explain why they’re funny, and then stops to check his stopwatch—because “they always say that the secret of comedy is timing.” But when he once tried to use this approach to dissect some Nazi jokes, the applause was replaced by whistles and boos.
German is too precise for jokes
Wehn thinks he’s found a simple explanation for the differences in funniness: “One of the reasons comes from differences in grammar and sentence structure between the German and English languages.”
Lots of jokes in English depend on the possibility of placing the key words in the joke at the end of a sentence. More generally, many English jokes are of course based on word play and intentional confusion of words, whereas the greater exactness of German words makes it more difficult to create those kinds of mix-ups.
For Wehn, this is the exact reason “why we Germans like physical humor so much. An old fogey who trips over a cake or gets it smashed in his face is always funny, even during a famine.”
As a comedy ambassador, Wehn isn’t intimidated by Germany’s poor score in the survey. Laughing about everything is just a sign of a naive mind, he says. “After all, we Germans love to laugh, just like the British do. The difference is that we like to laugh after our work is done, whereas the British prefer to laugh instead of working.”

A native speaker of American English, I learned to speak fluent German and French by living first in Germany, then Quebec (Canada) for long periods-- learning not only the languages, but also the associated cultures and rhythms of daily life. My studies in cognitive linguistics and cognitive science have provided me with expertise in the subject matter and terminology of a number of related academic domains in French, German, and English. My studies have also informed my translation technique through a deeper understanding of linguistic structure and meaning across languages.
I also hold a degree in computer science and have worked in a number of technical jobs bringing together computers and language. That experience included six years in video game localization at Ubisoft Montreal, one of the world's largest game studios producing some of the top-selling games on the market. As such, I am familiar with technical terminology in French and English in particular, and fully conversant with the many specific technical and linguistic constraints associated with translation and localization of video games.
