When I started freelancing almost ten years ago, I used a variety of methods to reach out to potential clients. I get occasional approaches through my ProZ.com profile, which in itself makes it worthwhile, because one smallish job covers your membership fee. I also use the invoicing feature and free website hosting, so it saves me money in those areas. As others have said the Blue Board is useful and could help you avoid some major headaches. ProZ.com also has a very high rating in Google, so your profile or KudoZ questions you have asked or answered (which will link through to your profile) are likely to come up in web searches, thereby increasing your visibility.
