In conjunction with long-term collaborator, Rem Koolhaas, Prada has just launched, Prada Prototypes, an online auction of extra limited-edition Prada garments and accessories. The auction features 24 pieces including dresses, bags and shoes all “hand-selected by Miuccia Prada”. The group’s revenues were up last year by 18.8% to €1.66bn. See more at www.prada.com

Belgian designer Carine Gilson, who launched her couture lingerie brand in 1994, reports a 30% leap in orders over the past year, claiming that people have really only just latched onto the concept. Gilson offers semi- and fully made-to-measure lingerie services, although with €275 for a “bespoke” G-string it may be cheaper to buy your loved one a diamond or botox.

Since 2006, the renowned Italian car design firm, Pininfarina, has been diverting its skills away from the likes of Maseratti, to produce bespoke vehicles for collectors. James Glickenhaus, an investment manager and film producer from New York State, spent an estimated €2.5 million to have a supercar tailor made for him.

A REVOLUTIONARY CHANGE TO BIKES
Here is a very interesting idea for a revolutionary change to bikes.

The idea is very fascinating – changing the fork with something that can improve the cycle structure and the handling. Since the end of the Seventies many attempts have been made to modify a bike’s cycle structure by changing the front drive train. However, just a few of them have been put into practice with a production bike, more so for economical reasons than for technical reasons.

The classical fork suspension works well, or rather, very well, since it is even used in competitions. However, it requires a complex and strong frame. If the vibrations are dampened in a different way, suspension could be fixed directly to the engine – there would be no need for a frame and therefore bikes would be lighter.
The first example of a front fork, where the rear suspension technique was moved to the front tyre, is the Endurance Elf in 1977. After this the Bimota Tesi and the Yamaha GTS were produced using the same design (the Telelever system of all BMW bikes is based on a different principle). Now, Hans Helm, from Germany, presents his new project. Helm has been working on this project for almost twenty years – its X900 ‘bike of your dreams’ is now ready. The rear fork and the front single arm with shock absorber are fixed to the 138 bhp Suzuki RF 900 engine. The bike weighs only 165 kg. The steering system is in the tyre hub and it is run by a vertical arm that connects the tyre to the wheel.

The cycle structure is made of a very light alloy while the tank and the saddle are now a single piece and are made of carbon fibre. The toothed belt final drive has won out over the belt final drive because Helm’s company (VH Motorradtechnik) is specialised in this kind of modification. Whoever tried the X-900 found it precise and a joy to ride. It remains to be seen what bike companies think about this project.

Ecco una proposta molto interessante per rivoluzionare la moto.

Il tema è affascinante: sostituire la solita forcella da moto con qualcosa che razionalizzi la struttura della ciclistica e migliori la guidabilità. Dalla fine degli anni Settanta a oggi ci sono stati svariati tentativi di rivedere la costruzione della moto partendo proprio dall'avantreno, ma pochi hanno visto la realizzazione in serie, più per ragioni commerciali che tecniche.


La classica sospensione a forcella funziona bene (si può dire benissimo visto che viene impiegata persino nelle competizioni), tuttavia costringe alla costruzione di un telaio complesso e robusto, mentre se si prova a scaricare le sollecitazioni in altro modo si può arrivare ad avere sospensioni fissate direttamente al motore eliminando il telaio e alleggerendo la moto.
Il primo esempio di forcellone anteriore (cioé trasferire la tecnica delle sospensione posteriore alla ruota davanti) si deve alla Elf da Endurance del ’77, poi c'è stata la Bimota Tesi, la Yamaha GTS (il sistema Telelever applicato all'intera gamma di moto Bmw sfrutta un principio differente) e ora arriva la proposta del tedesco Hans Helm. Da quasi vent'anni Helm lavora attorno alla sua idea e finalmente ha coronato il suo sogno firmato X900. Il motore è un Suzuki RF 900 elaborato a 138 cavalli, su cui sono fissati il forcellone posteriore e il monobraccio anteriore con ammortizzatore. Pesa così soltanto 165 kg. Il meccanismo di sterzo è all'interno del mozzo ruota ed è comandato da un braccio verticale che collega appunto ruota e manubrio.



Le parti ciclistiche sono costruite in lega leggera, serbatoio e sella in pezzo unico sono in fibra di carbonio, la trasmissione finale è a cinghia dentata invece che a catena poiché l'azienda di Helms (la VH-Motorradtechnik) è specializzata in questo tipo di modifiche. Chi ha provato la X-900 l'ha trovata precisa e divertente. Adesso si aspetta la risposta di un costruttore vero.
