English to Swedish: How the Peacock got his Beautiful Feathers General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Folklore
Source text - English When the world was young and when all the animals spoke the language of mankind, the peacock, U Klew, was but an ordinary grey-feathered bird without any pretensions to beauty. But, even in those days, he was much given to pride and vanity, and strutted about with all the majesty of royalty, just because his tuft was more erect than the tuft of other birds and because his tail was longer and was carried with more grace than the tails of any of his companions.
He was a very unaccommodating neighbour. His tail was so big and that he could not enter the houses of the more lowly birds, so he always attended the courts of the great, and was entertained by one or other of the wealthy birds at times of festivals in the jungle. This increased his high opinion of himself and added to his self-importance. He became so haughty and overbearing that he was cordially disliked by his neighbours, who endeavoured to repay him by playing many a jest at his expense.
They used to flatter him, pretending that they held him in very high esteem, simply for the amusement of seeing him swelling his chest and hearing him boast. [11]One day they pretended that a great Durbar of the birds had been held to select an ambassador to carry the greetings of the jungle birds to the beautiful maiden Ka Sngi, who ruled in the Blue Realm and poured her bright light so generously on their world, and that U Klew had been chosen for this great honour.
The peacock was very elated and became more swaggering than ever, and talked of his coming visit with great boastings, saying that not only was he going as the ambassador from the birds, but he was going in his own interests as well, and that he would woo and win the royal maiden for his wife and live with her in the Blue Realm.
The birds enjoyed much secret fun at his expense, none of them dreaming that he would be foolish enough to make the attempt to fly so far, for he was such a heavy-bodied bird and had never flown higher than a tree-top.
Translation - Swedish När jorden var ung och alla djur talade människans språk, då var U Klew blott en vanlig gråfjädrad fågel utan några anspråk på skönhet. Men även på den tiden var han mycket angelägen om högmod och fåfänga, och sprätte gärna omkring bland alla kungligheter, bara för det hans fjäderbuske var resligare och hans stjärtfjädrar längre än de andra fåglarnas, och med en elegantare plymförning än alla hans fjäderbröder.
Han var en väldigt besvärlig granne. Hans stjärt var så stor och skrymmande att han inte kunde komma in i de lägre fåglarnas hem, därför besökte han alltid de större hoven, och roades av en eller annan välbärgad fågel när djungelfestivalerna tilldrog sig. Detta spädde på hans höga självbild och gödde hans självgodhet. Han blev så högfärdig och övermodig att han hjärtinnerligt avskyddes av sina grannar, som sökte återgälda honom genom att skämta om honom på hans bekostnad.
De brukade smickra honom och låtsas att de hade honom i mycket hög aktning, för det blotta nöjet att se honom burra upp bröstet och höra honom skrävla. En dag låtsades de att fåglarnas stora audiens hade hållits för att utse en ambassadör som skulle förmedla djungelfåglarnas hälsningar till den vackra jungfrun Ka Sngi, som regerade i det Blå riket och så givmilt hällde sitt ljussken över deras värld, och att U Klew hade valts ut för denna stora ära.
Påfågeln förtjustes av nyheten och blev kaxigare än någonsin, och skränade nu till brädden om det stundande besöket, och kraxade att inte bara skulle han skickas som fåglarnas ambassadör, utan även i eget intresse, och att han där skulle uppvakta och erhålla den kungliga jungfrun som sin hustru och leva tillsammans med henne i det Blå riket.
Fåglarna skrattade brett bakom ryggen på honom, ingen av dem hade kunnat drömma om att han skull vara så ärkedum att försöka göra en så långväga flygfärd, för han var en så grovt byggd fågel och inte hade han någonsin flugit högre än trätopparna.

Translation, writing, and language processing has been at the core of my heart for as long as I can remember.
However, translation has not been my main job, although I've been doing it on the side of my other jobs. First time I was hired as a translator was in 2009 for Le Monde Diplomatique, translating news articles from French to Swedish.
Nowadays, I have am more fluent in Spanish than French, as I would not put French anymore on my resume, although I know of the language.
Professionally, I have translated news articles and TV-shows (subtitles). Pro-bono I worked for years with Stockholm Pride, from Swedish to English.
When it comes to terminology, I have a professional background in various fields, with a good sense of vocabulary in fields of music and dance, arts and theatre, gardening and the aviation industry.
Please help me take my first steps as a freelance/pro-bono translator as I build my resume.
