Na achttien jaar draagt Alewijn Broere zijn taken als algemeen directeur bij SBW over aan financieel directeur Geert Jan van Leeuwen. Broere neemt de leiding op zich van de vestiging in Brazilië. Van Leeuwen wordt verantwoordelijk voor Europa en Afrika. De nieuwe situatie gaat is per 1 maart ingegaan.
Volgens Broere zit er perspectief in de Latijns-Amerikaanse markt. “Het perspectief moet echter wel worden omgezet in harde orders, goede en betrouwbare kwaliteit en innovatie. SBW do Brasil is niet alleen een productievestiging, maar steeds meer een volwaardig weefselkweekbedrijf. Met een afdeling Marketing & Sales en Planning; een onderzoeksafdeling voor het ontwikkelen van protocollen van nieuwe gewassen, het opschalen van het TIB (eb en vloed) systeem en het onderzoek met somatische embryogenese van koffie en pinus. Dat geheel vraagt om meer leiding dan er nu is. Ook het afharden van de gewassen na de weefselkweek is een belangrijk aandachtspunt. Kortom, er is veel werk te doen. De Latijns-Amerikaanse markt heeft potentie, dus het is wijs om nu te investeren.”
Sterke punten
‘Focussen' is het woord dat Van Leeuwen en Broere gebruiken. Focussen op de sterke punten van de vestigingen. Nederland is het kenniscentrum, in Ghana vindt de bulkproductie plaats en in Macedonië de meer complexe productie. Voor Brazilië ligt de nadruk, naast het ontwikkelen van de lokale markt, op innovatie en kennisuitwisseling met Nederland.
Van Leeuwen: “Wat Nederland betreft richten we ons op innovatie in productie en technieken. Dat biedt meerwaarde voor onze klanten, zoals het TIB-systeem en somatische embryogenese bewijzen. Kostenbesparende en productieverhogende technieken. Met Naktuinbouw hebben we in het verleden voor de sierteelt het Naktuinbouw-Elite® systeem ontwikkeld, om planten zo gezond mogelijk te krijgen.”
“SBW legt de lat nu eenmaal erg hoog,” vult Broere aan. “Daarbij hoort ook de hoge kwaliteitseis aan de producten die uiteindelijk de markt op gaan. Het uitgangsmateriaal moet schoon zijn. Dat is tegenwoordig een must! Verder is eind vorig jaar een klanttevredenheidsonderzoek gedaan, waaruit bleek dat we worden gewaardeerd om onze betrouwbaarheid, goede kwaliteit, goede logistiek en goede communicatie. Daar willen we ons op blijven richten, dat vindt onze klant belangrijk.”
Orderportefeuille
Tot slot een vraag over de huidige marktsituatie. Voelt SBW inmiddels ook de consequenties van de kredietcrisis? “De orderportefeuille is nog goed gevuld, er zijn nauwelijks orders komen te vervallen,” stelt Van Leeuwen gerust. Enthousiast vervolgt hij: “Sterker nog, na een bezoek aan onze vestiging in Ghana plaatste een klant recent zelfs een extra order!”

After eighteen years Alewijn Broere hands over the reins as Managing Director at SBW to Financiel Director, Geert Jan van Leeuwen. Broere will assume responsibility for running the facility in Brazil. Van Leeuwen will take responsibility for Europe and Africa. This situation came into effect on March 1 st.
There is plenty of potential in the Latin American market, according to Broere. “That potential needs to be turned into definite orders, good, reliable quality and innovation. SBW do Brasil is not only a production company, but increasingly a fully fledged tissue culture laboratory. It has its own Marketing & Sales and Planning departments; a research department for protocol development for new crops, up-scaling of the TIB (ebb and flood) system and research into Somatic embryogenesis for Coffee and Pine. All of that demands more guidance and leadership than there is at the moment. Also weaning off of crops that come out of tissue culture is an important area for attention. In short, there is a lot of work to be done. The Latin American market has potential, therefore we are wise to make that investment now.”
Strengths
‘Focus' is the word that Van Leeuwen and Broere use. Focus on the strengths at each facility. The Netherlands houses the expertise, in Ghana bulk production is carried out, and in Macedonia more complex production takes place. Besides development of the local market the emphasis for Brazil the emphasis lies in innovation and exchange of expertise with The Netherlands.
Van Leeuwen: “As far as The Netherlands is concerned, we concentrate on innovation in production and technology. That gives our customers added value, such as the TIB-system en Somatic embryogenesis prove. Cost reduction and production increasing technologies. In the past we developed the Naktuinbouw-Elite® system for ornamental plants with the Naktuinbouw, to produce the healthiest possible plants.”
“SBW keeps the bar raised high,” adds Broere. “And that includes the high quality standards for plants that reach the market. The source material must be virus free. A definite must these days! Also, at the end of last year we carried out a customer satisfaction survey; the results showed that we are respected for our reliability, good quality, good logistics and good communication. We want to continue paying attention to those areas that our customers value.”
Order portfolio
In conclusion a question about the current market situation. Has SBW felt any of the effects of the current economic crisis? “The order portfolio is still well filled, and almost no orders have been lost,” Van Leeuwen assures. Enthusiastically he continues: “In fact, after a visit to our Ghanaian lab a customer recently placed an additional order!”

Al na enkele minuten in het gezelschap
van Hilde Francq valt op dat
deze dame bijzonder goed weet
waarover ze het heeft. Nochtans heeft
ze nooit een echte designopleiding
gevolgd. Na haar studies economie
rolde ze geleidelijk aan en veeleer
toevallig in de wereld van de kleuren.
“Ik startte mijn carrière een twintigtal
jaar geleden in de fietssector, maar
het viel me op dat de meeste fietsen
er vrij saai uitzagen. Daar probeerde
ik iets aan te doen, bij de kinderfietsen
bijvoorbeeld met behulp van
licenties van Disney en Studio 100. Zo
ben ik me steeds meer in kleur gaan
verdiepen en specialiseren, in functie
van een marketingconcept.”
Hilde Francq had de kleurmicrobe
stevig te pakken en richtte later ‘Box
3’ op, haar eigen bedrijf dat kleuren
combineert en voorspelt. Fietsproducenten
maken vandaag nog steeds een
belangrijk deel uit van het klantenbestand
van het bureau, maar in de loop
der jaren is het bureau steeds breder
gaan werken. De naam van het bureau
is in dat opzicht niet toevallig gekozen.
“Een doos is als een rechthoek met
vier zijden”, legt Hilde uit. “Daar halen
we er een van weg, om te laten zien
dat we zonder problemen ‘outside the
box’ kunnen denken.”
Het bureau voegt de daad bij het
woord. Vandaag werkt Box 3 onder
meer voor producenten van brilmonturen
en zitzakken, maar Hilde en
haar team passen deze inzichten ook
toe op interieurs en decoratie. De
manier van werken voor de verschillende
sectoren vertoont echter
overeenkomsten. “Het is telkens
onze taak om de juiste kleuren uit
te kiezen voor de juiste doelgroep,
ook al past natuurlijk niet elke kleur
bij elk product”, vertelt de zaakvoerster.
“Bovendien zijn kleurtrends
ook steeds gelinkt aan sociale en
maatschappelijke trends. Het feit
dat we voor zoveel verschillende
bedrijven werken, zorgt ook voor een
interessante kruisbestuiving. Uit de
ene sector leren we ook zaken bij die
we bij andere opdrachten kunnen
toepassen.” Onder de klanten van
Box 3 vinden we onder meer klinkende
namen als Beaulieu, Wildspirit
en Arte.
Evolutie, geen revolutie
Twee keer per jaar publiceert Box 3
een lijvig ‘Color Trends’ rapport, waarin
het bureau haar inzichten en bevindingen
bundelt. “Daar werken we
maar liefst zes maanden aan”, aldus
Hilde Francq. “We reizen de wereld
rond, bezoeken overal beurzen en kijken
goed om ons heen in onder meer
steden en musea. Dat ‘trendspotten’
wordt zo haast een tweede natuur,
een zesde zintuig bijna. Wij kijken in
zekere zin anders naar de wereld dan
de meeste mensen.” Hilde haalt haar
inspiratie letterlijk overal vandaan. Zo
baseerde Box 3 zich voor een nieuwe
collectie tafellinnen van Serax op
de retrotrend die we tegenwoordig
overal zien. Het kleurenpalet was
gebaseerd op ‘vergeten groenten’ als
postelein, kardoen en rode biet die
opnieuw in zijn. Bij de presentatie van
de kleurcollectie kwamen ook deze
groenten prominent in beeld.

In Decostyle, just for once, we will not introduce you to a designer in the traditional sense of the word. But the job of ‘trend forecaster’, Hilde Francq, is just as interesting as that of designer. With her company, ‘Box 3’, she forecasts the most important trends and shifts in the area of color combinations, materials and textures. And Box3 does that for companies from many different industries.
After only a couple of minutes in the company of Hilde Francq it is obvious that this lady really knows what she is talking about. However, she had never had a proper design training. After completing her studies in Economics she gradually and rather coincidentally rolled into the world of colours. “I started my career about twenty years ago in the bicycle industry, but it struck me that most bicycles looked pretty boring. I tried to do something about that, with children’s bikes for example, using licences from Disney and Studio 100. So I began to look more deeply into and to specialize in color, as a feature of a marketing concept.”
Hilde Francq had seriously caught the color bug and later established her own company, ‘Box 3’, that combines and forecasts color. Today, bicycle manufacturers are still an important part of the company’s client base but over the years the company has broadened its work area. In that context, the name of the company was not chosen by accident. “A box is like a rectangle with four sides,” Hilde explains. “We take one of them away to show that we have no problem thinking ‘outside the box’.”
The company puts its words into actions. Nowadays, Box 3 works for manufacturers of eyewear and beanbags, among others, but Hilde and her team also apply these insights to interiors and decor. The working methods for the different industries do have similarities. “It is always our job to choose the right colors for the right target group even though not every color is suited to every product,’’ says the business manager. “Furthermore, color trends are always linked to social and societal trends. The fact that we work for so many different companies also makes for interesting cross-breeding. Also, we can learn things from one sector that we can apply to other assignments.” Among the Box 3 customers we find resounding names such as Beaulieu, Wildspirit and Arte.
Evolution, not revolution
Twice a year, Box 3 publishes a weighty ‘Color Trends’ report, where the company bundles its insights and findings. “We like to work for at least six months on it,” says Hilde Francq. “We travel all over the world to visit trade fairs and take a good look around us in cities and museums everywhere. That ‘trend spotting’ has become almost second nature, practically a sixth sense. To a certain extent, we view the world differently from most people.” Hilde literally takes her inspiration from everywhere. Thus, for the new collection of table linen from Serax, Box 3 turned to the retro-trend that we are seeing everywhere right now. The color palette is based on ‘forgotten vegetables’ such as purslane, cardoon and beetroot that are ‘in’ again. At the presentation of the color collection, these vegetables were prominently in the picture.
