Pismo jest środkiem komunikowania sztucznym (wymaga posługiwania się specjalnymi narzędziami, i materiałami), pośrednim (zakłada brak styczności fizycznej), i zdepersonalizowanym (umożliwia zwracanie się do osób całkowicie nieznanych). Jako jego szczególną właściwość Stankiewicz podaje: „Wysłanie komunikatu pisemnego nie zapewnia, że dotrze on do adresata i zostanie zrozumiany”. McLuhan twierdzi, że „pismo jest linearne i abstrakcyjne, mowa uzupełniona przez ton głosu, natężenie i intonację”.
Ten rodzaj komunikacji ma charakter sformalizowany i jako forma kontaktu werbalnego obliguje nadawcę do poprawności pisowni i składni języka, dbałości o odpowiednią strukturę komunikatu i jego precyzyjność. Styl urzędowy stosowany jest np. w dokumentach firmowych, zarządzeniach, rozporządzeniach, zawiadomieniach czy instrukcjach. Podstawowe tezy komunikatu powinny być wyodrębnione, sformułowane w sposób czytelny dla odbiorcy.

McLuhan claims: "writing is linear and abstract, speech is supplemented by the tone of voice, its intensity and intonation".
This type of communication is of formalised character and as a form of verbal contact it obliges the sender to maintain the correctness of spelling and syntax of language, and to care for the right structure of the announcement and its preciseness. The formal style is applied in e.g. company documents, orders, regulations, notices or instructions. The fundamental points of the announcement should be distinguished, formulated in a way that is clear for the recipient.

During that time I participated in Audiovisual Translation Workshops conducted by professors J. Dodds and C. Taylor, from Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori, University of Trieste. The programme was supervised by European Commission experts, which included consultations with translators from Directorate-General for Translation.
