Questo evento online è pensato per essere come un tranquillo ritrovo in un bar, durante il quale si possono scambiare opinioni, raccontare storie, chiedere consigli e stringere nuovi legami. L’unica differenza è che ognuno potrà partecipare dalla comodità di casa sua sorseggiando la sua bevanda preferita.

The event will be rather informal, but I'd like to focus on two topics: Freelancing (with the associated questions such as marketing strategies, time management, tax and insurance issues) and the translation industry in Australia, maybe even with a focus on Melbourne (e.g. which agencies and other potential clients are there, what options for makting and advertising, NAATI and AUSIT issues, language combinations and their prospects, etc.)

If you have any more ideas, please feel welcome to add them. Maybe you'd also like to hold a speech or give a small presentation.

I believe the number of attendees will be rather small. if you have any suggestions for suitable venues, I'd be grateful for that too.

Arra kérek mindenkit, hogy valamilyen innivalót hozzon magával, mert nem tudok üvegeket/palackokat cipelni. Segítőket a krumpli- és zöldségtisztításhoz reggel 8.30-tól szeretettel várok.

Akinek bármilyen, a szakmához kapcsolódó eladni- vagy elcserélnivalója van (szótár, CD, USD-kábel, akármi), hozza magával, a csereberére a helyszínen lesz lehetőség.

I am organising a powwow in Budapest on Saturday 22 September at lunchtime and in the afternoon till late evening.

We'll be having a lunch (fine Hungarian goulash and home-made pancakes, same menu as at my Powwow in 2005) on the same place :-) Everyone is asked to bring along something to drink as I am not able to carry the 1,5 l mineral water or juice bottles. Helpers to peel the vegetables and/or potatoes kindly welcome from 8.30 a.m.

If you have anything translation-related to sell, you can bring with (dictionary, CD, USD cable, whatever) - for exchange or for money.

It is 8 years since we last held a Powwow in Cambridge - in the days when UK Powwows were still a rarity.

Last time we met at the Fort St George in England, by the river on Midsummer Common and attracted translators from all over East Anglia and further afield.

We could repeat the exercise - or find somewhere closer to the station if preferred.

Hello, translators and interpreters in Canada's National Capital Region!

According to this article from ATIO, the National Capital region boasts 41% of the province's translators. Surely, then, there are enough people who want to get together for a dinner downtown on a lovely Saturday evening!

This is my first PowWoW so I'm open to suggestions - I'm certainly looking forward to meeting you and exchanging industry information.

Powwow - Midweek or Weekend?

I am thinking of organising a PowWow here in São Paulo within the next three months and would like to know if a midweek powwow would be feasible.

The issue here is that the restaurant I have in mind has a weekend price that is almost double the midweek price (although the weekend meal is more complete) and I am worried that if the powwow was at the weekend the price would scare people off.

I could of course choose another restaurant, but the point is that this restaurant serves a typically Brazilian dish, and this would be nice as I know of two returning translators (one returned from London and another about to move over here from Portugal) and it would be nice to (re)introduce them to Brazilian food.

The restaurant is reasonably well accessible, in a neighbourhood famous for its restaurants and bars. The traffic is OK during weekdays, but at night and on Saturdays it is very full with tourists who come over to this neighbourhood for a day out - this restaurant fills up very quickly on Saturdays, but weekends and Sundays are a different story. The restaurant does not operate in the evening, it is lunch only. Bus service poor on Sundays, reasonable other days.

Any comments would be most welcome.

Hello,

An email was recently sent about the Powwow in Chicago. Unfortunately, I'd completely forgotten that it was on the Thanksgiving weekend, so the new date is Friday, December 4th. Those who received the first email, please disregard the old date.

As I mentioned on the email, I wanted to propose this Powwow to discuss the current state of professional translations and the ways we can set us apart from informal translators, crowdsourcing and TM.

I've been offered a place where we can hold the powwow, it has computers, projectors, etc. so we could even have presentations. That's still isn't confirmed so I'll be posting more information about that.
