First, into what language(s) and second whether the unreferenced context is American Football (NFL / National Football League) or Basketball (box zone): the Hail Mary forward pass being played in both. It's not entirely clear.

Either way, both of my children - playing both games and armed with a copy of the 89-page NFL Rulebook, plus the 190-page Manual of International Federation of American Football Rules & Interpretations (2020-2021 IFAF Edition), and the 105-page FIBA Basketball Rules - could, as early as the age of 16, have translated that passage without much difficulty from 'English', or an approximation thereto, and into German.

on the positive side, basketball is played in many countries, so for most 'target audiences' translating this wouldn't be like talking of flying to fishes.

on the negative side, it's filled with an 'internal jargon' that only makes sense to 'insiders', so (unless you're an aficionado / basketball is your obsession) it would take a lot of research to make any sense of it, and then even more to find 'equivalents' in the target language(s).

Personally, I'm not interested, especially taking into account that Proz sees nothing wrong with people submitting raw MT/AI output in languages / subject matters they know nothing about as 'their own work' - have better use of my time than being free tester for MT/AI output ...

In the last contest edition we started promoting participation in social media (Instagram and Facebook) and we're outlining our promotion strategies for the upcoming contest now. Participation is vital for defining winners so your suggestions are welcome of course.
We're also reviewing and selecting shorter texts and studying different ways to reward participation and voting. In this edition we awarded wallet credit for all winners at the Award Ceremony so as to boost future participation too.

There's simply no point in holding these contests if ProZ doesn't take effective action to get more people interested.

Promote them more. Reward participation/voting with points or discounts. Make voting easier. Make the texts shorter. Get a single judge to pick a winner. If necessary, force people to vote.

I share your feelings of frustration that this contest got "stuck" for a while already.

However, if you compare the stats with the previous contests, the size of it has become suddenly unmanageable.

I envision it as a marathon ending in a dead-end alley. While there were few contestants, it was possible to get the first ones, award them prizes, and send everybody home. Now there is a huge crowd in the boulevard who can't even see the finish line. Those who got there can't exit because of the same crowd. So it's stuck.

I see some language pairs having less than, say, 5 entries. With all due respect, I think there should be a statistical formula that, after the contest had been closed, would enable to set a cut-point, say, 'X'. Any language pair having less than 'X' entries would have only Likes and Dislikes, no classification.

The extreme case is a language pair having ONE entry, and NO Likes/Dislikes. All we can do is pity translation clients who need translation in this undersupplied pair, as they'll have very few single-step direct translation options.

I agree - my language pair (Portuguese to English) is STILL in the Qualification stage, how many months on??

This endless process is very off-putting and makes it all feel like a major waste of time and effort.

Can we have some input from the organisers, please??

The Finals phase appears to be ending in 14 days' time, but for my language combination at least, we are still in the Qualifications phase. Is the competition ever going to move on to the voting stage?

It is quite probable that not enough people are bothered to rate the 12 entries, which presumably means that the competition organisers will never be able to decide which entries are deemed appropriate for final voting, and that the competition is therefore dead in the waters.

Personally, I have almost forgotten the text that was used for the competition, and by now, I would have to go back and read it all again very carefully in order to vote, a bit of a time-waster, and I have all but lost interest in the contest altogether.

May I suggest that in future contests, you set some fixed deadlines for the different stages and then stick to them, please?

But for now, can we please just move on to get the contest over and done with?
