Una investigación de la Universidad de Granada (UGR) ha demostrado que los huesos de aceituna pueden
compatibilizar un doble uso y servir durante nueve ciclos para limpiar residuos de metales industriales vertidos en
el agua y después como biocombustible sin afectar al medio ambiente.
El estudio, desarrollado por un grupo de investigación sobre concentración de sólidos y biorrecuperación de
la UGR, ha analizado el uso del hueso de las aceitunas como biosorbente, por lo que tiene la capacidad de limpiar
aguas contaminadas, y después usarse como combustible en un proceso complementario.
Una de las investigadoras del grupo, que dedica su tesis doctoral a estos usos de los huesos de aceituna, Alicia
Ronda, explica que en una primera fase han comprobado que estos huesos, tras una activación química,
incrementan su capacidad de absorber metales pesados.
El equipo utilizó ácido nítrico, lo que mejora hasta 35 veces la capacidad de eliminar residuos de plomo de los
huesos de las olivas.
Además, el estudio ha comprobado que los huesos se pueden regenerar para realizar hasta nueve usos
consecutivos como biosorbente hasta que se saturan por completo.
El grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Granada señala que, además, han comprobado que estos huesos
pueden tener como segunda función un uso como biocombustible, especialmente en calderas de biomasa.
El estudio ha comprobado que el proceso de descomposición térmica del material activado químicamente es igual
al de los huesos de aceituna que no se activan para mejorar su uso como descontaminadores del agua, ya que
sigue conservando sus propiedades para ser utilizado como combustible.
“Se concluyó que el hueso de aceituna puede activarse químicamente para mejorar el rendimiento en la
eliminación de plomo de aguas residuales, regenerarlo para su reutilización, y finalmente utilizarlo como
combustible en instalaciones de energéticas”, apunta la investigadora.
Los investigadores están estudiando además los posibles efectos ambientales del segundo uso de los huesos de las
olivas y en un primer estudio han comprobado que el metal limpiado quedaría en las cenizas tras el uso de esta
materia como combustible.
El equipo sigue estudiando la eliminación de los metales que absorben estos huesos para asegurar que la
alternativa propuesta sea viable desde el punto de vista medioambiental.

The scientists have demonstrated that olive stones can serve dual roles and can be used during nine cycles to clean waste from industrial metals discharged in water and as an environmentally friendly biofuel.
The study, carried out by a UGR research team focused on solids concentration and biological restoration, analyzed the use of olive stones as a biosorbent, a characteristic that enables them to be used to clean contaminated waters. The stones can later be used as a fuel after undergoing an additional process.
One of the members of the research team, Alicia Ronda, has dedicated her doctoral thesis to these uses of olive stones. Ronda explains that she and her colleagues found in the initial phase of the study that, after chemical activation, the capacity of the stones to absorb heavy metals increased. The team employed nitric acid, which increases the ability to remove lead waste materials from the olives stones by up to 35 times.
The study also showed that the stones can be recycled for reuse as a biosorbent up to nine consecutive times before becoming fully saturated.
The UGR researchers note that the stones can additionally take on a second function as a biofuel, particularly for use in biomass boilers.
The study showed that the thermal decomposition process of the chemically activated material is equal to that of the olive stones that are not activated in order to improve their performance as a water decontaminant. The activated material still maintains the properties necessary for its use as a fuel.
“We concluded that the olive stone can be chemically activated in order to improve its performance in the elimination of lead in waste waters, recycled for further use, and finally used as a fuel for energy production”, the researcher notes.
The team is also studying the possible environmental effects of the second use of the olive stones. In an initial study, they have shown that the cleaned metals remain in the ashes after its use as a fuel.
The team is continuing to study how to eliminate the metals that the stones absorb, in order to assure that the proposed alternative is viable from an environmental perspective.

La Universidad de Granada participa en esta investigación multidisciplinar, junto al Centro de Investigación de Biodiversidad y Clima en Alemania, el CSIC, la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona y el Instituto para la Investigación Marina en Holanda
Un equipo de investigación multidisciplinar, en el que participa la Universidad de Granada (UGR), ha logrado un
avance importante en el conocimiento de las respuestas terrestres y oceánicas a la variabilidad climática durante
el último milenio, incluyendo la era industrial.
Dos registros marinos recuperados en la cuenca del mar de Alborán y analizados a muy alta resolución han
permitido la reconstrucción de las condiciones climáticas y oceanográficas, así como la identificación de influencia
antrópica en la región más occidental del Mediterráneo durante este periodo de tiempo. El calentamiento global, el cambio climático y sus efectos sobre la salud y la seguridad representan probablemente
las amenazas más severas en la historia de la humanidad.
Informes recientes del Grupo Intergubernamental de
Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático (IPCC 2007, 2014) han proporcionado evidencias científicas tales como que el
aumento observado en la temperatura media de la superficie terrestre a nivel mundial desde el comienzo del siglo
XX ha sido probablemente debido a la influencia antropogénica.
Asimismo, la concentración promedio global de dióxido de carbono en la atmósfera ha aumentado desde la
revolución industrial debido a las actividades humanas y esta concentración también ha superado el rango
registrado en los testigos de hielo durante los últimos 800.000 años. En este mismo sentido, en enero de 2016, la
NASA y la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica de Estados Unidos (NOAA) revelaron que la
temperatura media mundial en 2015 fue la más cálida desde que comenzaron a registrarse las temperaturas en
1880.
Las reconstrucciones de la temperatura global de la superficie terrestre en el Hemisferio Norte realizadas durante
el último milenio indican condiciones cálidas durante la denominada Anomalía Climática Medieval (8001300
d. C.) y temperaturas más frías durante la Pequeña Edad de Hielo (1300-1850 d. C.).
Variabilidad natural del clima
Las modelizaciones climáticas proporcionan una explicación coherente al progresivo enfriamiento durante el último
milenio debido a una variabilidad natural del clima (modulaciones del ciclo solar y erupciones volcánicas). Sin
embargo, se observa que durante el siglo XX esta tendencia global al enfriamiento se ha invertido. Los modelos
climáticos no son capaces de simular el rápido calentamiento observado durante el siglo pasado sin incluir la
influencia humana junto con los mecanismos naturales de forzamiento climático.
Con esta motivación un grupo multidisciplinar de investigadores procedentes del Centro de Investigación de
Biodiversidad y Clima en Alemania (Vanesa NietoMoreno),
de la Universidad de Granada (Miguel OrtegaHuertas),
del CSIC en España (Francisca MartínezRuiz,David GallegoTorres y Santiago Giralt), de la Universidad Autónoma
de Barcelona (Jordi García-Orellana y Pere Masqué) y del Instituto para la Investigación Marina en Holanda (Jaap
Sinninghe Damsté) ha llevado a cabo un estudio de la reconstrucción de las condiciones climáticas y
oceanográficas en la región más occidental del Mediterráneo utilizando para ello sedimentos marinos recuperados
en la cuenca del mar de Alborán.
El espacio estudiado es de gran interés, ya que es especialmente sensible y vulnerable al forzamiento climático y antropogénico debido a su configuración de cuenca marina semicerrada y a su posición latitudinal afectada por
diferentes regímenes climáticos. Para este estudio se han integrado diferentes indicadores geoquímicos
inorgánicos y orgánicos, infiriendo así variables climáticas como la temperatura de la superficie del mar, humedad,

Los indicadores han revelado señales climáticas consistentes en ambos registros marinos de condiciones climáticas
fundamentalmente cálidas y áridas durante la Anomalía Climática Medieval, cambiando a condiciones
mayoritariamente húmedas y frías durante la Pequeña Edad de Hielo. El período industrial se caracterizó por
condiciones más húmedas que durante la previa Pequeña Edad de Hielo y la segunda mitad del siglo XX por una
progresiva aridez.
La variabilidad del clima en la región Mediterránea parece estar impulsada por variaciones en la irradiancia solar y
la modulación de la Oscilación del Atlántico Norte (NAO) durante el último milenio. La NAO alterna entre dos fases.
Una de ellas es positiva y se caracteriza por vientos del oeste más intensos que transportan las tormentas hacia el
norte de Europa. Esto resulta en inviernos secos en el Mediterráneo y el norte de África durante la Anomalía
Climática Medieval y la segunda mitad del siglo XX.
Por el contrario, la fase negativa de la NAO está asociada a condiciones opuestas durante la Pequeña Edad de
Hielo y el periodo industrial. Durante fases positivas prolongadas de la NAO nuestros registros muestran un
debilitamiento de la corriente de la circulación termohalina y una reducción de eventos de “upwelling” (surgencia
de aguas profundas más frías y ricas en nutrientes) en el año 1450 y 1950 d. C. La influencia antropogénica se
manifiesta mediante el aumento sin precedentes de la temperatura, progresiva aridificación y erosión del suelo y
por el aumento de la concentración de elementos contaminantes desde la época industrial. A gran escala, los
patrones de circulación atmosféricos y oceánicos (la NAO y la circulación meridional atlántica) y las variaciones de
la irradiancia solar parecen haber desempeñado un componente clave durante el último milenio.
Los resultados indican que en el registro más reciente el clima de la región más occidental del Mediterráneo está
determinado por forzamiento natural e influencia antrópica, en tanto que las principales conclusiones derivadas de
este estudio han sido publicadas recientemente en un volumen especial de la revista de la Sociedad Geológica de
Londres sobre el cambio climático durante el Holoceno.
Translation - English New evidence found of land and ocean responses to climate change over last millennium
Two recent marine records made in the Alboran Sea Basin and analysed at high-resolution have allowed scientists to reconstruct climate and oceanographic conditions in the westernmost Mediterranean region during this period. They have also shed light on the human impact on the region.
The University of Granada, together with Germany’s Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), took part in this multidisciplinary research project.
A multidisciplinary research team, including the participation of the University of Granada (UGR) has made an important breakthrough in our knowledge of the terrestrial and ocean responses to climate variability during the last millennium, including the industrial era.
Two marine records recovered in the Alboran Sea Basin and analyzed in high-resolution have allowed scientists to reconstruct climatic and oceanographic conditions and identify anthropogenic influence on the westernmost Mediterranean region during this time period.
The effects of global warming and climate change on health and security likely represent the most severe threats in the history of humankind. Recent reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 2007, 2014) have provided scientific evidence of this, including the fact that the increase observed in the average temperature of the Earth’s surface since the beginning of the 20th century is most likely due to human influence.
The average global concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has also increased due to human activity since the industrial revolution and has surpassed the range recorded in ice cores from the last 800,000 years. Similarly, in January 2016, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) revealed that the average global temperature in 2015 was the warmest since record-taking began in 1880.
Reconstructions of the global land surface temperature in the Northern Hemisphere conducted during the last millennium indicate warm conditions during the so-called Medieval Climatic Anomaly (800-1300 AD) and colder temperatures during the Little Ice Age (1300-1850 AD).
Natural climate variability
Climate modelling provides a coherent explanation regarding progressive cooling during the last millennium due to natural climate variability (solar cycle modulations and volcanic eruptions). However, the global cooling trend was reversed over the course of the 20th century. Climate models are incapable of simulating the rapid warming observed during the previous century without including human influence along with natural climatic forcing mechanisms.
With this motivation, a multidisciplinary research team from the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Germany (Vanesa Nieto Moreno), the University of Granada (Miguel Ortega Huertas), the CSIC (Francisca Martínez Ruiz, David Gallego Torres and Santiago Giralt), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Jordi García Orellana and Pere Masqué) and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (Jaap Sinninghe Damsté) carried out a study of the reconstruction of climatic and oceanographic conditions in the westernmost Mediterranean region using marine sediment recovered from the Alboran Sea Basin.
The area studied is of great interest as it is especially sensitive and vulnerable to climate and anthropogenic forcings due to its being a semi-closed marine basin. Its latitudinal position also causes it to be affected by different climate regimes. Different organic and inorganic geochemical proxies were integrated for the study, inferring climate variables such as sea-surface temperature, humidity, changes in land vegetation cover, fluctuations in ocean circulation, and human influence.
The indicators have revealed consistent climatic signals in both marine records of fundamentally warm and dry climate conditions during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA), changing to mostly humid and cold conditions during the Little Ice Age (LIA). The industrial period was characterized by more humid conditions than during the previous Little Ice Age and by progressive aridity during the second half of the 20th century.
Climate variability in the Mediterranean region appears to be driven by variations in solar irradiance and the modulation of the North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) during the last millennium. The NAO alternates between two phases. One of them is positive and characterized by stronger western winds that carry storms toward northern Europe. This resulted in dry winters in the Mediterranean and northern Africa during the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the second half of the 20th century.
On the other hand, the negative phase of the NAO is associated with opposite conditions during the Little Ice Age and the industrial period. During prolonged positive phases of the NAO the records show a weakening in the thermohaline circulation current and a reduction of so-called “upwelling” events (a surge of deep, colder and more nutrient-rich waters) in 1450 AD and 1950 AD. The anthropogenic influence is expressed through an unprecedented temperature increase, progressive aridification and soil erosion as well as through an increase in the concentration of contaminant elements since the industrial era. On a large scale, the atmospheric and ocean circulation patterns (the NAO and Atlantic meridional circulation) as well as variations in solar irradiance appear to have played a key role over the last millennium.
The results indicate that in the most recent records, the climate of the westernmost Mediterranean is determined by natural forcing as well as by human influence. The principle conclusions derived from the study have recently been published in a special edition of the Journal of the Geological Society of London about climate change during the Holocene.
