I have a new client who requests me to translate directly on his website using the existing text as reference. There is no TM I really have to search everything. I was wondering if there is a CAT tool that allows me to copy new segments into the project as I come along and updates the TM live. I would then add the existing translation as well.

I am quite useless when it comes to IT, so I would need a really detailed explaination if I have to do something like changing commands. All I know is that I am using SDL Trados Studio and I have memoQ and CafeTran ready to install next week when my new computer arrives. Does any of these programmes do the trick? And, if so, how?

I would suggest you do it through notepad Mar 8, 2018

Hello,

You can try catalyst which is supposed to work in direct connection with the source. I did not try it yet and I'm not sure you can do it simply.

Otherwise, I'm not an absolute specialist of SDL functions however, I already used the following method:
1 - copy/paste the content in a notepad (or text processor like MS Word), be sure to make a file by language
2 - create a new project in SDL with all files

4 - why not translate in SDL and then copy/paste again in the client's CMS ?

This may seem long and tedious but I find it really usefull when nothing else works. There may be better solutions, I leave SDL pros explain them here.

Good luck,
Sara

You can use any CAT tool once you have your source files in a manageable format. For me, this is the word and any one of the translatable file formats (xliff etc.). When I translate web pages, my clients send me the xml files converted to xliff format. My only concern is to translate.

As Sara pointed out, you can copy and paste the page contents into a text or word file and after translating put the relevant texts back.

I remember few threads or advertisements for working directly on the web pages but as an inexperienced person in the technical aspects of this subject, I would rather avoid them because there is a lot of coding in these pages which are invisible to my eyes and I am afraid of corrupting the files.

This is another area and normally you aren' supposed to do any changes. If they insist on such an action, I would assume that they don't know what they are actually doing / what they want and this is one of the most serious alarm bells for me. Such a client is almost impossible to please which in turn might lead to a lot of headaches for you.

Some more information Mar 8, 2018

Maybe I should explain more:

I have translated several websites already and usually I get my login to WP, extract the text, translate it and copy it in again.

This time everything is done live and the client does not pay for the wordcount but the time. That also means he will replace me if I am too slow. So I cannot copy and paste the allready existing 40k segments. I also have to check them before using them because they have quite a few mistakes.

It is a shop so it has a lot of pages that have little but repetitiv text.

My hope was to do it by product category and first collect the existing translations of the category and proofread them before adding new translations. This way I can do it all in one go. Otherwise I have to do the proofreading first and then translate the new text. But the client wants to see a daily process on the new translation.

Right now I copy everything into an excel file so I have it for once I found a solution.

To me, what you are doing is spending unbillable time with a client. I hope that you will find a way to compensate the hidden(!) work. What you are describing is definitely something to be paid for.

The thing is that he want the new 8k segmants done before I check the existing 40k. I get paid for everything in the end. I just thing in the longrun it would be faster to do the proofreading first. If I need some extratime to get the ST into a CAT tool it is covered. I just do not want to go through hundreds of pages before I can actually get started. Just to have everything in the TM

I got it wrong, sorry

I looked for the name a specific software for such tasks. Unfortunately, I cannot remember its name nor when and where I have seen it, but it was quite recent and probably here on ProZ.

I am quite illiterate on the subject but I am sure that there are well-performing website text extraction tools available.

Maybe it is a good idea to consult web design forums as well. <

So... WYSIWIG? Mar 8, 2018

Jennifer Richmond wrote:

So this is a Wordpress site, right? Or, but, you translate web content directly by overwriting it via some kind of browser-based editing functionality, right?

So, do you normally copy the text from within a WYSIWIG text editing box, paste it in e.g. Word, translate the Word file, then "clean" it (i.e. generate a target Word file), and then paste the text back into the Wordpress text editing box?

It sounds as if you could use a cleanless CAT tool (i.e. one that will allow you to copy small chunks of text to e.g. MS Word, translate it, and then without having to clean it simply copy it again and paste it into the web site's editing field. As far as I know, Felix has this capability (but I'm not sure).

As for the old translations, I would suggest that you create a TM from them anyway, and then simply add "!!" in front of the source and target text of each translation unit, so that you never get 100% matches and so that you can see if a match comes from the un-proofread segments.
