Checking out all these options now. I'm sure I'll find a good solution among these. It turns out Wikipedia has a page with a list of options:

That's the motivation for starting this thread.

Thanks for your input. I'll certainly take it into account. At the moment my priority is quick and easy data entry and a versatile format that keeps my options open re. publishing.

I think a great, open source combo is:

Dictionary shell: GoldenDict (desktop version)
Dictionary file format: .dct (Sdictionary format)
