English term or phrase: feel an awareness of someone
Hi,
I was wondering about the meaning of “feel an awareness” in the following passage. The author is giving a lecture on a topic similar to the ones he had taught together with his late friend, John.
I was thinking of something along the lines of “I sensed his presence” also on the basis of the subsequent sentence where he says that his friend's soul is fully there, but maybe my interpretation is too “strong”?
Thank you very much!

I felt an awareness of John O’Donohue, recalled in my mind our many discussions of science, society and spirituality, of his experiences as a Catholic priest, views of Celtic mysticism, work in philosophy, and how I experienced him, as not just a poet, but a walking, breathing poem.
(...) Somehow the self-organizing soul of John’s mind was fully there, in Ed, me, and the room.

yes, you could say "I sensed his presence" as well as it is really about feeling as if he was actually there, present , in the room since he (the writer) has such a vivid memory of John O’Donohue at that moment...

could be rephrased to fit sentence as:
it was almost as if John O’Donohue were present in the room, as I recalled...

Some people firmly believe they can feel the presence of deceased friends/relatives acting almost like guardian angels or spirit guides. These people believe that the soul is eternal, even if the physical body is gone. This often stems from a strong yearning for that deceased person as there had been such a closeness between them...

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi, Gallagy! Thank you so much!

Asker: Yes, that often happens. In the case of this author, this "feeling" is also related to his view of mind as an emergent, self-organizing process of an embodied and relational flow of energy and information. He believes we are not completely separated from one another, since energy has no boundaries... Thank you for these reflections!
